Museu Vale is launching the Exhibition Production training course, focused on educational activities that present some of the disciplines that involve this specific knowledge: Production, Curatorship, Expography and Graphic Design.
The fourth and final module, developed in partnership with designers Gustavo Marchetti and Paulo Chagas, proposes an introduction to graphic design and visual communication of exhibitions based on theoretical and practical aspects, which will be worked on simultaneously, throughout the 4 meetings through case studies developed by the studio.
About the facilitators:
Gustavo Marchetti and Paulo Chagas, together with Gabriela Castro, are part of the design studio Bloco Gráfico. The studio develops editorial, expographic and visual identity projects for clients such as Instituto Moreira Salles, Sesc-SP, Masp, MAM-Rio, among others. Their work has won awards at the ADG Brazilian Graphic Design Biennials and has been selected by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).
They have twice won the Aloisio Magalhães Award for best graphic design for a book from the National Library Foundation (2017 and 2018) and the III Latin American Prize for Editorial Design (2018). They received the special award from the 6th Ibero-American Design Biennial (BID) – Design Award for (by and with) Culture – in the category of Space and Interior Design (2018). He won the “Best in Show” award from the Type Directors Club of New York in 2019. In 2021, two works were selected for the permanent collection of contemporary design at the Museum of Avant-Garde (MA-g).
About the classes:
Class 1 – Presentation, fundamentals of the visual identity of an exhibition
Who we are: brief presentation of the studio.
Starting point: beginning, middle and end of a project.
Project conceptualization: integration with the exhibition content and exhibition design.
Graphic pieces of an exhibition: opening, wall text, wall caption, display case, section titles, chronology, credits, signage and supporting graphic elements.
Dialogue with the exhibition content and the exhibition space: route, internal and external signage.
Class 2 – Project structuring, visual identity as a system
Project presentation: how to present and defend the project to the client, artist and curator.
Visual identity as a system.
Typography: font selection, use in different scales and supports.
Expressiveness vs. neutrality.
Color palette and materials.
Class 3 – Communication pieces in different media and supports
Printed materials: folder, invitation, catalog.
Accessibility: physical and digital resources for different needs.
Digital resources: audio guide, videos, Braille, embossed photo.
Digital communication (social networks): events and products associated with the exhibition.
Workflow: briefing, design, composition, review, amendments, proofs and finalization.
Class 4 – Execution (final artwork, detailing, materials and production)
Production, materials, assembly: cut-out stickers, plotting, block letters (MDF, acrylic and PS), printing on paper, posters; combination of techniques and materials.
Testing, proofs, monitoring.
Final artwork, detailing, specification for budget.
Photographic and video recording for portfolio and publicity.
How to prevent and resolve problems and errors in production.
Closing of the course: open for conversation and exchange of experiences about references, academic training and professional experience in the area of design, current panorama of the activity in Brazil.
