Museu Vale takes the Vidas em Cordel exhibition to the 23rd Flip 2025

In partnership with the Museu da Pessoa, “Vidas em Cordel” presents stories of famous people from Espírito Santo.

Who doesn’t love hearing and telling good stories? And what if these stories are filled with rhyme, art, and tradition? This is the unmissable combination of the exhibition “Vidas em Cordel,” a partnership between the Museu Vale (ES) and the Museu da Pessoa (SP). After visiting two Espírito Santo locations, it arrives—with free admission—at Espaço Vale, as part of the Paraty International Literary Festival (FLIP), starting July 30th.

The exhibition presented to the public at Flip will be a version of the main exhibition, which features twenty-two life stories in the form of illustrated cordéis. In this edition in Paraty, panels depicting two inspiring stories from Espírito Santo will be displayed, along with tributes to Dona Domingas, a symbol of the struggle of the Black population of Espírito Santo, and to the Indigenous leader Ailton Krenak, an immortal of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

A cart with free cordéis and an Instagrammable panel will also be available for the public to join in the exhibition.

The public will be able to learn about the story of Regina Maria Ruschi and Dilvana Silva Santos from Espírito Santo. Regina is the founder of the Barra de Renda Group, which since 2015 has dedicated itself to passing on the bobbin lace technique from generation to generation in the bucolic resort of Barra do Jucu, in Vila Velha.

The public will also have the opportunity to learn the story of Dilvana Silva Santos, who led selective waste collection and environmental education in Colatina, aiming to reduce the amount of dry recyclable waste sent to the municipal landfill, as well as reintroduce this material into the production chain, generating income for members.

For Claudia Afonso, director of the Vale Museum, telling these stories through cordel and woodcuts is a way to highlight and value the memories of people who built our country with knowledge, crafts, and struggles that are often invisible.

“By presenting these stories, we reinforce the Museu Vale’s commitment to valuing popular culture and local memory. Echoing these stories from Espírito Santo at an important event like Flip is a way to preserve and amplify what is most precious to us: the real stories that shape us as a society,” says Afonso.
